Alternate History:
The growth spurt AU is a direct continuation after the golden ending of Undertale, with Frisk living in the aboveground world adopted by Toriel with the other monsters. The alteration is that Flowey, through methods that have not been nor likely will be detailed explicitly, has been transformed back into a boss monster... only to rapidly age up to account for the missing time. My interpretation is that Asriel's interpretation is "Frisk probably did something and frankly I'm not sure I even want to ask". Although initially there was somewhat of an intense freakout in returning to "life", he is now an extremely awkward young adult and the youngest member of the royal line. He tries somewhat ineptly to navigate life on the surface, surrounded by people, the monsters he tortured endlessly as an emotionless flower, and his distressingly well-adjusted sibling, Frisk.
Having adopted Frisk, Toriel is left with two kids to deal with instead of just one. Her and Asgore remain very separated, but Asgore has co-adopted Frisk anyway, and now Asriel and Frisk bounce between the two on the surface. Thankfully, Asriel is in therapy, and talking about his issues seems to have been helping tremendously. Lacking anyone else to talk about it with, he discussed his issues with Chara, the way that growing up he was controlled and relegated to their "scapegoat" whenever something bad happened. He also discussed exactly what happened on the day that Chara died and they went to the surface. He told his therapist about their final moments, where Asriel prevented them from killing humans and returned to the underground, Chara told him that he was an idiot. Being an emotionless flower for years on end didn't help either. Frisk and Asriel have provided minimal explanation as to the different timelines that they've been through as to inform their families of exactly what went on, but the details remain close to their chests, mostly due to the fact that Asriel is just glad it's all over and doesn't exactly want to revisit it.
Not revisiting it hasn't exactly worked out for him. In a fit of angst while Toriel was complaining about Asgore being a murderer, he revealed that he'd killed essentially everyone in the underground at least once, including Frisk and her, while he was a flower. He left to comisserate with Asgore, leaving Toriel to deal with the information. As Toriel reconciled emotionally with Asgore, the two promised each other that they would be sure to treat Asriel better and ensure his happiness without judgement.
His parents agreeing to agree about him certainly helped, but Asriel had plenty of issues to occupy his time even without adding outside ones. After becoming the absolute god of hyperdeath, he could make tons of death ray beams and awesome rainbow swords. At this point all he could make was a rainbow letter opener. In an attempt to practice, he sought advice from his parents, learning that magic is an expression of the self, and it weakens if forced into other configurations. While his mother commented on his strange tendency to hold himself back, Frisk got him to open up, and let his magic flow naturally. This terrified him, due to the discovery that his magic was taking the form of plants and flowers.
He has slowly been coming to terms with his magic, as shown when he displayed the flower power to Alphys on their trip back into the underground to make sure the core didn't overheat or anything. Of course, to match the positive progress, being in a claustrophobic environment underground again started to make him incredibly anxious, so it's pretty clear he's still got a ways to go.

Now able to comprehend the atrocities he's inflicted, Asriel's esteem for himself plummets further through the pavement, where it will remain to this day. When Frisk gives him the emotional support he's been unable to comprehend without a soul, he takes his first steps towards redemption, thinking that maybe he can at least do something to make up for some of the trouble he's caused. He breaks the barrier, frees the underground, and returns everyone's souls.
What happens next is where Growth Spurt AU Asriel more significantly diverges from Undertale; prior to this point, OU Asriel and GSAU Asriel are nearly identical as children and flowers (just with a more pinned-down interpretation of what Asriel's childhood was like for the AU) whereas Growth Spurt AU is focused on what happens next after a timeskip from the ending point of OU Undertale. Restored to life as a boss monster, reunited with his soul, and, if such an event were absent of trauma, Asriel is physically aged up to the time lost to being a flower just to make sure that trauma sinks in. Now, he's having to deal with the fact that he's existing long after he thought he would stop. Asriel is an optimist; although he's no longer riding the high of redemption for destroying the barrier, that emotion has become baked into his new personality now that he's capable of having one again. He wants to make a go of his new life, and reconcile with his family and the friends that he had to spend so long not being able to have feelings for. Now that all of them are living aboveground, the fact that he's having to build himself up anew is helped by the fact that everyone else he's ever known is having to do the same. Maybe not because of as extreme reasons, but it's definitely helping him stay stable. And with the joy everyone else has of finally being free of the underground, he's finding that a lot of who he was before... maybe isn't quite as lost as he thought it was. In many ways, he's still the same Asriel that he was the day before he died, and the same overwhelmed one that Frisk hugged just before the barrier was broken. Kind, empathetic, caring...
If only he didn't have an entire slew of chaotic hormones making everything worse, causing him to try to hide his vulnerabilities behind apathy and sarcasm. The aging change has not been particularly kind to Asriel, as all the teenage uncomfortableness is right forefront at his mind. He's had enough experiences to give him a weird quantity of being wise beyond his years--he's not going to go off on something drastic, despite the stupidity that generally accompanies his stage of young adulthood. And yet, he's also really not used to his body, so the less-extreme lapses in judgement, such as eating an entire meatlover's pizza made of human food absolutely not designed for monsters in one sitting, is absolutely on the table. He's also been a flower for the past years, completely devoid of interaction with other monsters, and he's having some difficulties socializing with people that aren't Frisk, brought on by the isolation he's been through, and his current excessive awkwardness. Normally you have to try to be as gangly as him, but he somehow manages it without effort anyway, barely achieving the status of "groomed".
Asriel is a monster haunted by his past. Though he resolves to move forwards, and work past all the issues he's had, both from when Chara was a destructive influence on him and the interim after his death, it is a daily struggle not to get sucked back into the mire of depression and self-hatred. He doesn't want to despise himself, but his self esteem on the best of days can be defined as "fragile", and despite the positive aspects of living on the surface and starting anew, he's still caught up in elements from the past. He shows it in things that he does--wearing the symbol of the royal family for instance, despite its near-dissolution and irrelevance in the aboveground world. After all, for all intents and purposes, he grew up too fast and skipped half of his childhood. Discovering that his magic was flowery was a chilling moment that demonstrated how much he couldn't handle the thought of how much of Flowey still lingered within him.
Still, it's not all bad. He's cultivated a wry sense of humor and his sardonic nature can be brushed aside when he needs to get real for a moment. There's so much good that he missed as a flower: love, affection, appreciating people, a sense of belonging, the feeling of caring for family, and the crushing defeat when getting owned in smash bros. because you refuse to stop playing your crappy favorite character. Frisk, for having done so much for him in general, has a special role in Asriel's heart. He appreciates his family, and everyone's love and support in helping him begin to live again, but even though he hides it behind. And, hell, it's just nice to have a sibling again, especially one that doesn't add to your laundry list of issues to talk over with your irritating canine therapist.
